Hotels Wall Co. Journal · Practical guide
Measure the room. Give the art its place.
The right artwork size starts with the furniture and the usable wall around it. A canvas that looks generous in a close-up can feel lost above a wide hotel bed; a large square piece can overwhelm a narrow wall between lights. Use this guide to build a shortlist before choosing your final size.

Measure the usable wall first
Record the width of the headboard, sofa or reception desk, then measure the clear wall above it. Include the distance to the ceiling, wall lights, switches, curtains and adjacent furniture. Photograph the wall straight on and mark these measurements on the photograph. A mattress label alone is not enough: headboards often extend beyond the bed, and bed sizes vary between markets.
Work with the outside dimensions of the finished artwork. A listed canvas size and the overall dimensions with a frame may differ. Confirm the complete width, height and projection for the exact option you intend to buy.
Use two-thirds as a starting point
For an artwork above furniture, begin by testing an arrangement about two-thirds of the furniture width. This is a styling guide, not a fixed installation standard. A narrow wall, unusually tall headboard or deliberately oversized focal point may call for another proportion. Leave visible space around the composition so it reads as a considered part of the room.
| Furniture width | Two-thirds artwork width | Approximate inches |
|---|---|---|
| 150 cm | 100 cm | 59 in furniture / 39 in art |
| 180 cm | 120 cm | 71 in furniture / 47 in art |
| 210 cm | 140 cm | 83 in furniture / 55 in art |
| 240 cm | 160 cm | 94 in furniture / 63 in art |
These are calculated planning examples, not a list of available product sizes. Inch conversions are rounded. When using two pieces, include the gap between them in the total arrangement width.
What size art works above a king bed?
Measure the actual headboard before answering. For a 180 cm-wide headboard, a 120 cm-wide composition is a useful first mock-up. Atlantic Quiet offers a listed 120 × 60 cm canvas option, making its panoramic format worth comparing with that wall. Check the finished framed dimensions and the available height above the headboard before ordering.
If the headboard is wider, test a larger option or a coordinated pair. If it is tall, a shallow panoramic format can be easier to position than a square. Do not rotate an artwork merely to fit the wall: choose a composition designed for the orientation you need.
Choose a format for each hotel space
- Above a sofa: compare a panoramic canvas with a balanced pair, and view the arrangement from the opposite seats.
- Behind reception: check the desk, logo, lighting and staff sightlines together. Artwork should have its own space rather than crowding operational signage.
- On a tall wall: test a portrait format such as Afternoon Arcade. Its vertical composition offers a different proportion from a landscape.
- In a lounge: a square composition such as Gilded Orbit can anchor a seating group when the wall has enough surrounding space.
Approve one full-size mock-up before repeating it
Use paper templates to mark the outer edges of the shortlisted sizes. Review them from the doorway, bed and seating position. Photograph the preferred arrangement with the room lights on. For a multi-room project, record the artwork, size, frame, quantity and wall location in one schedule, then check any rooms with different layouts separately.
Keep proportion and hanging height as two separate decisions. Once the size works, use our placement guide to establish the centre height and ask your installer to confirm the mounting method for the actual wall and finished artwork.
Questions from hotel owners
Should every guest room use the same size?
Only where the wall and furniture layout support it. Group rooms by layout, approve one example of each type and record the chosen size for that group.
Can I choose a size from the room mock-up image?
Use the image for styling inspiration. Confirm the product dimensions and measure your room; lifestyle images are not installation drawings.
